From the Montpelier Board of Public Works meeting on October 14, 2026

Montpelier approved pursuing a state grant to remove a recurring logjam and a concrete-and-metal obstruction from the Salamonie River.

Brad Neff described a $60,000 grant and a 20 percent, or $12,000, city obligation. The discussion did not resolve whether the $60,000 represented the grant itself or the full project budget. No award or cleanup contract was approved.

The proposed work included bank cleanup from the river park to a bridge. Neff said the work would go to public bid.

In July, the Ledger reported that the city had voted to contact the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers about river cleanup. The October action pursued a state funding route for removal work, without establishing that the two funding efforts were the same program.

Chief Snyder said children had tried to navigate the debris and that removal could reduce a safety hazard. No injury was reported.

A possible golf-cart crossing and walking trail were discussed separately. Neff said the cleanup grant would not pay for that work.
