Montpelier RDC Votes to Contact Army Corps of Engineers About River Cleanup

From the Montpelier Redevelopment Commission meeting on July 6, 2026

The Montpelier Redevelopment Commission unanimously voted to have Dave Kieser contact the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers about cleaning the Salamonie River from the bridge to 500 East. The stretch near Fireman's Park has debris blockage that the city wants addressed.

A prior debris removal grant application submitted in February 2025 was denied because the blockage was caused by man-made obstructions rather than natural debris. An 80/20 state grant is available annually for river cleanup.

Brad Neff noted he has been asking the county for help but has met "some resistance." A separate dredging project was also discussed but would be handled independently.
