Montpelier: $70,000 Housing Preservation Grant Generating Strong Interest
From the Montpelier Board of Works meeting on June 9, 2026
Mayor Nef reported strong public interest in the $70,000 USDA Housing Preservation Grant, describing a "busy morning" at City Hall with questions about the program. The grant provides up to $10,000 per household with no match required — what the mayor called "free money" for qualifying residents.
Applications can be printed from the city's website or picked up at City Hall. The city does not review applications; staff scan and forward them to Rural Development for evaluation. Eligible improvements include both interior and exterior work. Only Montpelier city residents are eligible.
The mayor plans to apply for $100,000 from the program next year.
