Dunkirk Pool Opens Friday With Late Start and Lifeguard Shortage

From the Dunkirk Park Board meeting on May 27, 2026

Dunkirk's main pool will open Friday, May 29, but swimmers will have to wait until 1 PM on opening day due to limited lifeguard availability. The baby pool may not be ready for Friday's opening after undergoing liner removal and replacement with thick epoxy paint — two coats applied — though it is expected to follow shortly after.

The pool has 32 total staff members but only three certified lifeguards. One staff member has expressed interest in becoming a lifeguard. The shortage may force the pool to close on June 6, 8, and 9, when only one lifeguard is available.

A health department pool inspection was scheduled for today, May 28, at 10 AM. The results were not yet available at press time.

Residents should be aware that early-season pool hours may be limited by staffing constraints, and the three-day closure in early June could affect families planning weekend activities.

The pool had been filling earlier this month in preparation for the May 29 target opening.
