From the Blackford County Schools Board meeting on October 27, 2026

Early results from a Blackford County Schools calendar survey strongly favor an August 11 start over August 4 for next school year, the district reported October 27 after receiving 451 responses.

Respondents also overwhelmingly favored keeping a full week for fall break. Support remained fairly strong for a three-day Thanksgiving week. Whether students should attend on the Friday before spring break drew a closer response.

The survey follows the October 13 meeting, when Superintendent Yencer agreed to ask parents about future school calendars. The latest results will help shape two draft calendars now being prepared.

Parents and teachers strongly favor built-in snow days. Accommodating those days makes it harder to start later while still finishing before Memorial Day.

The district still needs discussions with the teachers union before bringing a proposal forward in November. The board has not adopted a calendar based on the survey.
