Dunkirk postponed a decision on giving up undeveloped streets in the Westview Addition until a survey can establish the exact boundaries involved.

The council held a public-hearing discussion Oct. 26 but took no vote to vacate the streets, a process that would end their designation as public streets. City Attorney Wes said title work connected to a possible property sale had drawn attention to streets laid out in 1961. The area is now largely farm ground and woods.

Residents raised concerns about flooding and stormwater, as well as tree removal and underground infrastructure. One concern was that heavy equipment could damage a clay sewer line if the woods were cleared. No tree-removal plan was established.

Wes said any ordinance would need to preserve utility rights-of-way or easements, which allow continued access to utility infrastructure. He said surveyor Dan Farmer expected to finish a survey before the Nov. 9 meeting so a revised ordinance could be drafted.
