Trail Development on the Horizon — Montpelier Eyeing $400,000 State Grant in 2027

From the Montpelier Redevelopment Commission meeting on July 6, 2026

Two trail developments were discussed at the Montpelier Redevelopment Commission meeting.

Warren Brown reported the Blackford County Community Foundation received a $3.1 million gift-funded grant for trails in Hartford City. A 1.3-mile trail extension is being built there and going out to bid this month. Brown told the RDC this would be a model for future Montpelier trail expansion, with a long-term vision of a regional connector potentially linking to the Cardinal Greenway.

Dave Kieser flagged the Indiana Trails Program for Montpelier to pursue. The program provides up to $400,000 at an 80% state and 20% local match. The next application window is 2027. Kieser noted trails increase adjacent property values by up to 15%.

Brad Neff expressed strong interest, citing the value of walkability for community attractiveness.
