State Board of Finance to Vote on Gas Tax Reimbursement Monday

Indiana's State Board of Finance will vote Monday on reimbursing local governments for gas tax revenue lost during the state's gas tax holiday. State Budget Director Chad Ranney will introduce the formal transfer request covering April and May shortfalls.

The state's fiscal position supports the reimbursement. Indiana's budget reserves have reached $4 billion, a 60 percent year-over-year increase, and tax collections are running 6.8 percent above projections. Governor Braun has pledged all local governments will be "made whole by Nov. 1."

Not all state leaders share that confidence. Senate Appropriations Chair Mishler has urged fiscal caution, pointing to a $500 million road funding shortfall, Department of Child Services budget overruns, and unfunded teacher retirement liabilities.

The gas tax holiday itself expires August 6. Any further extension would require legislative action.

For Blackford County communities, the reimbursement directly affects road maintenance budgets. The timing of the payout could influence when municipalities schedule infrastructure projects already in their plans.
