Montpelier: Smoke Testing Planned for Northwest Flooding Area
From the Montpelier Board of Works meeting on June 9, 2026
Water Superintendent Chase Perry announced plans to get a quote for smoke testing — a diagnostic method used to find cracks, leaks, and illegal connections in sewer lines — on the northwest end of town between Windsor Street and Henderson Street, heading down Henderson Street to Rockefeller Street.
The area has had ongoing flooding problems. Perry said the sewer lines were "supposed to have been separated in the past, but you pop a manhole when it's raining, it kind of tells you otherwise — something's still in there."
Perry also proposed installing backflow preventers for three houses in the area, including one for resident Jody Scott who has active flooding issues.
