The Montpelier Common Council voted unanimously to contribute $5,000 to the Youth Leadership Academy, a program facilitated by the Shafer Leadership Academy out of Muncie.

The total annual program cost is $25,000, with contributions expected from Blackford County, Hartford City, and other economic development entities. Montpelier's $5,000 represents one-fifth of the total. The program targets high school sophomores, juniors, and freshmen, focusing on leadership development and community problem-solving.

A representative from the county economic development board explained the program at the meeting. Economic Development Director Warren Brown, who originally proposed the item, was absent. The council discussed whether to also contribute through the Redevelopment Commission but decided a single $5,000 city contribution was sufficient.

Council Member Travis made the motion, seconded by Council Member John. The item had been tabled at prior meetings since July.
