The Montpelier City Council held its second and final public hearing on a proposed OCRA grant for a comprehensive fire station rehabilitation, then approved the local funding match to support the application.

The total project cost is approximately $911,300 and covers demolition of the rear maintenance barn, electrical and mechanical work, interior and exterior improvements, and energy efficiency upgrades to the facility, which is 40 to 50 years old. Planned improvements include decontamination showers for firefighters, a larger conference room, consolidated truck storage with drive-through bays to eliminate the need for trucks to back onto State Road 18, and roof repair.

The council passed two resolutions unanimously. Resolution 2026-04 commits the Montpelier Fire Department to pledge $25,000. Resolution 2026-05 commits the city to pledge $86,300 from local income tax funds. Harrison Township is pledging an additional $50,000, bringing the total local match to approximately $161,300.

The grant application will be submitted June 2, 2026, with awards expected in the first week of September. Grant consultant Greg Bimer noted the process is "very competitive."
