Montpelier formally pledged $25,000 toward a countywide owner-occupied housing grant application after last month's vacancy left the council unable to act.

Officials said the proposal could provide up to $25,000 per owner-occupied home for repairs such as roofs, electrical work, heating and cooling, plumbing, and other necessary fixes. They said Blackford County would contribute $50,000, an economic-development group would contribute $50,000, Hartford City would contribute $25,000, and Montpelier was being asked for $25,000.

On Oct. 5, county commissioners set this $500,000 OCRA housing-rehabilitation application as their top priority. In Montpelier, council members said the city would not actually spend its $25,000 unless the grant is awarded, then voted to move forward with the pledge.

The action turns a Sept. 15 discussion item into a concrete local commitment for the countywide application.
