Montpelier: Commercial Dumpers Abusing City Compost Site

By The Blackford Ledger The Blackford Ledger

From the Montpelier Board of Works meeting on June 9, 2026

Street Department head Cameron Bonowit reported that commercial operators are abusing Montpelier's compost site, dumping "trailer loads and trailer loads" of brush. The site is intended for city residents doing yard waste disposal.

When commercial dumping overwhelms the site, the street department locks the fence — which also blocks residents from accessing it. Bonowit asked residents to place waste in front of the fence when it is locked; staff will relocate it.

Mayor Nef suggested installing a trail camera to monitor the site. Bonowit also reported that someone attempted to bribe him regarding compost site access.

Yard waste collection for residents runs on the first and last Monday of each month.
