Montpelier Board Debates Pool Fill Sewer Credits — No Decision Reached

The Montpelier Board of Public Works debated whether to change the city's pool fill sewer adjustment policy but reached no decision. Currently, residents who fill a swimming pool receive a 50% credit on the sewer portion of their bill for the excess water used. Brad Neff argued for a 100% credit since pool water does not enter the sewer system.

The board was divided. One member opposed the change entirely, and another was "on the fence." No formal vote was taken, but a potential compromise emerged: requiring residents to fill out a pre-approval form before filling their pool to qualify for any adjustment.

This month, two pool fills generated $97.45 in adjustments. Last month, 10 pool fills produced $1,657 in total adjustments. A specific case before the board involved a resident requesting $38.37 for the second half of a sewer credit.

Rick Miller of CDS Engineers noted that other water districts he works with are split on the issue — one offers a half credit while another requires a pre-fill form.
