Montpelier Approves $15,000 Purchase of 121 South Main Street Storefront

The Montpelier Redevelopment Commission voted to purchase the front half of 121 South Main Street for $15,000. The owner is keeping the back half for an active construction business. The building sits between two city-owned properties at 117 and 123 South Main.

The storefront needs significant work, including a new roof, new windows, and floor reinforcement. There is no rear exit from the front portion — one would need to be constructed through the adjacent city-owned building at 117 South Main. Water and sewage lines for 123 South Main, home to Meridian Health, run through the 121 basement.

The mayor said the city can apply for a $99,000 rural development grant due at the end of May that could cover both the purchase price and rehabilitation costs. He framed the purchase as protecting the downtown, noting the building is an eyesore and could damage adjacent city property if it collapses.

Council member Travis voted nay, citing concerns about spending commitments. “I’m not even worried about making money. I’m worried just about spending so much money that we already have earmarked that’s going to be gone,” he said, pointing to the Baldwin Park project and other pending expenditures. The motion passed despite his dissent.
