Hartford City's Highest-Producing Water Well Fails, Emergency Repair Approved

Hartford City's most productive water well has failed and will be out of service for approximately two weeks while crews rebuild it.

Well #4 had been leaking water around the pump shaft. City staff had been replacing packing material, but upon closer inspection the shaft was found to be beyond repair. Peerless Midwest, the city's regular well contractor, quoted $28,960 for the rebuild and $1,800 for a camera inspection of the well sleeve — totaling $30,760. The council approved the expenditure 5-0.

The camera work will verify the condition of the well sleeve while the shaft is removed. The city is currently operating on three wells instead of its usual four. The Water Superintendent said the city is "okay" for now but cautioned about capacity concerns during high-demand events such as fires or large industrial water draws.

Residents should not experience service interruptions under normal conditions, but the city has reduced capacity until the repair is complete.
