Dan Eckstein told the council Monday that Hartford City has been awarded a $40,000 USDA housing-preservation grant to help a small number of residents pay for home repairs.

Eckstein said the money could help with foundations, roofing, wiring, heating systems, and part of the water process. He did not say during the meeting how many households the grant is expected to reach or when application details will be published.

In the same remarks, Eckstein said the city's newer utility software had already helped staff identify leaks for about 20 customers early in the month. That follows the council's June approval of the automated meter system that city officials said would improve readings and help catch leaks sooner.

The USDA award and the leak-detection report pointed to two separate tracks moving at once: outside housing-repair help for residents and utility-system changes meant to catch water problems earlier.
