Dunkirk Zoning Administrator Resigns; Mayor Takes Over Role

Dunkirk's zoning administrator has resigned, and the mayor announced he will take over the role temporarily while the city searches for a permanent replacement.
The council unanimously approved a new compensation structure for the position: a flat $3,000 per year paid monthly at $250 per month. The previous arrangement paid 80% of zoning and permit fee revenue, capped at $2,500 per year.
The mayor signaled that the city may need to pay more in the future "if we want somebody to do it properly, if we want somebody to inspect." City Attorney Wes advised the pay change may need to be reflected in the city's payroll ordinance.
The resignation raises questions about the city's ability to enforce building codes and zoning regulations during the interim period while the mayor handles both roles.
