Dunkirk Opens Bids on New Three-Year Trash Pickup Contract
From the Dunkirk City Council meeting on August 10, 2026
Dunkirk opened bids from two trash haulers for a new three-year contract starting January 2027, then voted unanimously to table the decision until the next meeting for further review.
Best Way bid $13.86 per unit in Year 1, rising to $14.41 in Year 2 and $14.99 in Year 3. A second bidder — whose name was not clearly audible during the meeting — bid $14.50 per unit in Year 1, $15.08 in Year 2, and $15.68 in Year 3. Based on approximately 1,000 household units, the Year 1 difference between the two bids is roughly $640.
Best Way's Year 1 price appears to match the current contract rate. The council plans to review both bids at its next meeting, expected around August 24.
The clerk-treasurer noted the city may already have enough built into the current trash fee to cover Year 1 pricing. She will calculate whether a fee increase will be needed when the new contract takes effect in January 2027.
