Dunkirk Council Cuts Stormwater Fee in Half, Effective February 2027

From the Dunkirk City Council meeting on May 11, 2026

The Dunkirk City Council voted unanimously to cut the stormwater fee from $10 per month to $5 per month, reducing the annual cost for property owners from $120 to $60. The change takes effect in February 2027 with the next property tax billing cycle.

A council member proposed the reduction, noting that taxes had gone up and the city should try to lower the burden on residents. The stormwater fund currently has a balance of approximately $286,000.

One council member said he would prefer to eliminate the fee entirely but acknowledged it would be difficult to reinstate once removed. At the same meeting, the council approved a $25,000 sewer camera inspection contract funded from the stormwater budget — meaning the city is drawing down the fund while also reducing future revenue.
