Dunkirk approves police outfitting and fire tanker repair bills

Dunkirk's Board of Works approved two public-safety invoices Monday, authorizing $2,039.79 for police clothing for a new officer and $3,227.30 to repair hydraulics on a fire department tanker cab.
The police clothing bill drew discussion because city officials said the department's internal cap is $1,500. Anything above that has to come to the board or council. Officials said that limit likely has not been updated in years and no longer matches the cost of fitted vests, belts, and other gear for new hires.
The fire invoice covers hydraulics on the cab of the department's newer green tanker truck. Officials said the truck would be picked up and taken to another company, which suggests more work may still be ahead beyond the approved voucher.
Together, the two votes showed how routine equipment costs are straining older allowance limits and the city's maintenance budget.
