Dunkirk approves $4,560.68 in utility work and keeps studying Washington Street fix

Dunkirk's Board of Works approved $4,560.68 in utility repair and testing work Monday while city officials said they still are not ready to act on a separate water-line project near Washington Street.

The board approved $1,800 for Midwest Metering to test or service the plant's large meter and $2,760.68 for 4TC to repair an inflow meter in the sewage department. During the meter discussion, officials said the company that installed the large meter had locked the city out of recalibration functions and later went out of business, leaving Dunkirk to estimate readings by averaging other data.

Later discussion showed the city is still collecting quotes for a larger water-line problem tied to the west side of Washington and Stewart Brothers. Officials talked about whether an old pit or smaller line might still exist and said a larger project could cost around $50,000.

They also raised legal and accounting questions about whether general-fund money could be used for that job or whether the city would need an additional appropriation.
