Dunkirk Adds $50 Fee for Extra Water Disconnects, Requires Shut-Off Valves

Dunkirk City Council approved an amendment to the city's water ordinance that limits free water disconnection and reconnection requests and places new requirements on property owners.

Under the new rules, one disconnect and reconnect request will be allowed per 24-hour period at no charge. Any additional requests will cost $50. Residents who need their water disconnected will also be required to install a shut-off valve on their side of the water meter.

The shut-off valve requirement shifts some infrastructure responsibility to the property owner. The ordinance must be published in the newspaper before it takes effect.
