From the Blackford County Commissioner Meeting on June 1, 2026
The Blackford County Sheriff's Department will go from two drug-detection K-9s to one after a canine is retired on veterinary recommendation due to hip problems.
The sheriff told commissioners on June 1 that he would like to eventually have two dogs again, but replacing the retiring canine requires finding the right handler first. "Once you have that position you're locked into it," the sheriff said. Hartford City maintains two K-9 units of its own.
