Blackford County Resident Surrounded by Wind Infrastructure Asks About Property Taxes

From the Blackford County Commissioner meeting on May 4, 2026

George, a resident off of South 400 East, told commissioners he is surrounded by energy infrastructure — windmills in front of his property, a transmission tower beside his kitchen door, and a substation nearby.

"What does that make my property value worth?" George asked. "How does it increase it? My taxes went up? I thought our taxes was supposed to go down because of this. It ain't happening."

Commissioners explained that none of the wind and solar property in the county has been assessed yet. Tax relief from the assessed value of energy infrastructure "won't hit the assessed value just yet," commissioners said, estimating it "probably" won't arrive next year either — meaning residents may not see tax relief until 2028.

The exchange highlights a gap between the promised tax benefits of energy development and the timeline for those benefits to reach property owners.
