BCS Operations Fund Dips Below Target; Position Reductions Underway

From the Blackford County Schools Board meeting on May 19, 2026

Blackford County Schools' operations fund dipped below its target balance in April, driven by a three-pay month, but the dip is expected before the June property tax draw replenishes the account.

The education fund balance remains "well above target balance," according to the monthly financial report. This is the first year BCS has operated under a board-adopted target balance policy. The operations fund also ran lower because BCS chose not to transfer money in January to level out education fund overspending.

The board approved total claims of $1,626,545.38 and a monthly $140,000 transfer from the education fund to the operations fund as part of the consent agenda, which passed 4-0.

Separately, the superintendent has notified the board that positions are being eliminated through retirements and resignations — natural attrition rather than layoffs. A full update on position reductions is planned for the July board meeting after enrollment reconciliation.
