BCS Auditorium Construction On Track Despite Brief Delay

Construction on the Blackford County Schools auditorium project is progressing well, with 15 to 16 precast concrete panels now set on the south side of the building, construction manager Byron Azum reported to the board Monday. Panel installation started about one week behind schedule due to engineering complexity, but crews are now only about three days behind the original timeline, with no overall impact expected. Weekend overtime is scheduled to recover time. The panels include both decorative concrete and brick panels designed to match the existing school. The next phase involves turning the corner to complete the full auditorium structure, with steel crews following. A mid-July phase will add precast panels for the corridor, hallway, and connector to the existing school. Each panel weighs 60,000 to 70,000 pounds, requiring a massive crane that arrived on eight flatbed trucks. Inside the school, summer work is underway. Two old boilers have been removed and new pumps are being installed. A fire protection line is being run from the riser room through hallways to the auditorium area, and ceilings have been removed from the center entrance through the art room corridor for piping work. All mechanical work is expected to be completed before school starts in the fall. The project was previously reported as on track with exterior walls starting in mid-June.
