From the Montpelier Board of Public Works meeting on October 14, 2026

A side-by-side owner asked Montpelier to refund a local vehicle fee, prompting a police explanation that differed from the terminology in the city's posted ordinance.

Chief Snyder described the local process as a safety inspection rather than a second registration. The city's posted Chapter 75 expressly calls it local registration and requires a $15 fee per vehicle at the clerk-treasurer's office.

Under that published code, annual registration runs from May 1 through April 30. A temporary registration for up to five consecutive days also costs $15. The provisions require financial responsibility and working safety equipment, including lights and a horn.

The local definition applies to steering-wheel side-by-side-type off-road vehicles, not every vehicle commonly called an ATV.

The posted compilation is dated April 2025 and credits an ordinance passed June 10, 2024. Whether later amendments changed those provisions was not established. No refund, fee repeal or ordinance amendment was approved at the meeting, and the discussion did not establish that the local charge was illegal.
