Racetrack Owner Agrees to Help Address Montpelier Flooding
From the Montpelier Board of Works & Safety meeting on May 13, 2026
Montpelier is making progress on two flooding problems that have plagued residents near the racetrack and the Standard Oil/Windsor area.
Water Superintendent Chase Perry and Mayor Nef met with the racetrack owner about runoff flooding yards and cutting into town. The owner was "more than receptive" and proposed building a berm on the northwest side of the tracks to divert water away from Elm Street homes.
On the southeast side, drainage consultant Paul Shriber is proposing a drain to intercept water and route it to East Creek before it reaches town. Perry described this as "the best thing we could do because there's no other way we could take this water." The existing drain at the racetrack is only about 10 inches — too small to handle the volume.
On the Standard Oil/northwest end, Shriber reported that a drain carrying water to a creek northwest of town is planned for replacement and upsizing. The county would handle the drain to the creek, and the city would tie in its own drainage needs.
Perry emphasized that much of the flooding water originates from county land, raising questions about how costs will be shared between city and county.
