Montpelier Residents Complain About Trash Cans Left on Streets — Council to Discuss

From the Montpelier Board of Works & Safety meeting on July 15, 2026

Board of Works member Gary Kaggel raised resident complaints about trash cans being left on streets all week with trash overflowing around them, particularly on Jefferson Street and Main Street. Kaggel said he was approached about the issue twice, including at the July 4th event.

He cited other Indiana towns — Parker City and Selma — that have ordinances requiring cans to be removed within 24 hours of pickup, with $25 fines escalating to $50 for repeat violations. Those towns use stickers to designate disabled residents who are exempt.

The discussion raised concerns about enforcement logistics and potential negative community reaction. The mayor noted that a similar idea posted previously received "a lot of negative feedback." Water Superintendent Chase Perry noted Jefferson Street is "real bad," with children on bikes forced to ride in the road around the cans.

The board referred the matter to the city council for further discussion. A suggestion was made to include a flyer in water bills or put a notice in the newspaper before pursuing any ordinance.
