Montpelier Police to Study Monroe and Finch Intersection for Four-Way Stop
Location: Montpelier
From the Montpelier Common Council meeting on April 13, 2026
Resident Diana Ball appeared at the April 13 Common Council meeting to request a four-way stop at the intersection of Monroe and Finch Streets, citing years of concern about speeding and children's safety. The council deferred the matter to the Board of Works, which has jurisdiction over traffic control decisions.
At the April 15 Board of Works meeting, Police Chief Snider recommended an informal traffic study — observing the intersection during various hours using unmarked vehicles to get accurate compliance data. One board member who grew up in the area said a four-way stop is "probably" needed even without a formal study, but the board agreed a study was the prudent approach.
Chief Snider noted the department has received "several complaints" about vehicles running stop signs, speeding, and illegal operation of ATVs and minibikes in the neighborhood. Video evidence from residents confirms the issues.
Residents near Monroe and Finch can expect to see unmarked police vehicles monitoring the intersection in the coming weeks as the department gathers data to inform the decision.
