New speed limits along Main Street in Montpelier are now in effect, with signs already installed by Street Superintendent Cameron Bonet.

The changes: the stretch from Chestnut Street to Monroe Street drops from 30 mph to 25 mph, and the business district from Monroe Street to Windsor Street drops from 30 mph to 20 mph.

Chief Snider reported the new signs are up and noted he has "already got complaints about the speed zone." The speed limit reduction was passed as an ordinance by the council. The mayor asked that the changes be publicized in the paper.

Chief Snider noted the city can adjust speed limits on local streets but has no control over State Road 18.

Drivers on Main Street should note the lower limits, particularly the 20 mph zone through the business district.
