Montpelier Completes Hydrant Flush, Schedules Water Audit for June
From the Montpelier Board of Works & Safety meeting on May 13, 2026
Water Superintendent Chase Perry provided a department update at the May 13 Board of Works meeting covering several ongoing projects.
All fire hydrants were flushed in late April, taking about a day and a half and using approximately 300,000 to 350,000 gallons. All hydrants appeared to operate well except one at Windsor Street and Washington Street, which has a damaged bracket — likely from a lawn mower — and is leaking at the base. That hydrant has been tagged out of service pending repair.
A water audit is scheduled with Chad Reynolds from the Alliance for June 4 or 5. Perry is gathering financial and operational information in advance to ensure the audit goes smoothly.
A pump at the main headworks had been out of service for months and was sent to Kulie for repair. When reinstalled, two variable frequency drives (VFDs) failed. Perry has a repair quote from Kulie and is getting a second opinion from Peerless, which recently replaced a VFD at the water plant.
The department also ran a new water service line for a homeowner on Jefferson Street. The existing line crossed through a neighbor's property, so crews rerouted it to the alley and tapped into a water main there. The work took about two days.
The Consumer Confidence Report — an annual water quality disclosure required by federal law — is nearly complete and must be available to the public by July 1.
