Montpelier Chief Raises Electric Scooter Safety Concerns

Police Chief Snider raised concerns about electric scooters being ridden by children in Montpelier after witnessing a safety incident near the Civic Center. A child roughly 10-11 years old was riding with a 3-4 year old sibling, and the younger child was thrown off when the scooter turned a corner. The child was not injured.

Snider said he has "no problems with the kids riding these things" but wants to ensure safety. His concerns include children riding double, lack of helmets, and potential traffic hazards.

The chief is researching existing Indiana code to determine what authority the city has over electric scooters and whether a new or modified ordinance could address safety concerns. He plans to bring more information to the June meeting.
