Montpelier Announces Zero Tolerance on Minibikes and Go-Karts on Streets
Location: Montpelier
From the Montpelier Board of Works and Safety meeting on April 15, 2026
Chief Snider announced a zero tolerance enforcement policy for minibikes, go-karts, and other unregistered vehicles operating on Montpelier's streets and alleys. Penalties include vehicle towing (approximately $125), a citation (approximately $150), and possible arrest if a crime is committed during operation.
The chief clarified that alleys — whether improved or not — are considered highways under Indiana law and are off-limits to these vehicles. The policy follows a pattern of reckless driving complaints and a recent unspecified incident. Chief Snider emphasized the department is "not trying to stifle enjoyment" but that safety demands action.
Separately, the city's ATV and golf cart permit program is approaching its May 1 renewal. Permit stickers are delayed because the local printer has been having equipment problems. Chief Snider said if the stickers aren't ready within a week, they'll find another printer.
