Kindergarten Enrollment Drops Sharply at Blackford County Schools After Spring Roundup

By The Blackford Ledger The Blackford Ledger

From the Blackford County Schools Board meeting on April 21, 2026

Only 73 incoming kindergartners registered during the annual spring roundup at Blackford County Schools — down from 92 at the same point last year, which eventually reached 104 enrolled. The superintendent called it "by far the smallest kindergarten turnout" he has seen.

The drop appears to be a regional trend, with other area districts reporting similar declines. Some families may have missed the screening after it was initially promoted at the Lighthouse preschool but redirected to the school. The superintendent expressed hope that 20 additional enrollees may still come in.

Board members discussed whether the decline reflects a "COVID baby" effect — children conceived during early pandemic lockdowns in 2020 would be entering kindergarten in 2026-27. The district also has a small current 6th-grade class of roughly 80 to 81 students.

The low numbers compound an enrollment decline the superintendent flagged in January, when he warned enrollment was falling by about 30 students per year and per-pupil state funding increases were narrowing. Fewer kindergartners means the student pipeline shrinks further.
