Indiana Expected to Seek Major Disaster Declaration for Broader Recovery Aid
Rep. Victoria Spartz's office announced August 15 that Indiana is expected to apply for a Major Disaster Declaration "in the next few days" to seek additional federal recovery assistance beyond the emergency declaration approved the same day.
A Major Disaster Declaration provides significantly broader assistance than the current Emergency Declaration. While the emergency designation covers immediate life-saving and protective measures at 75 percent federal funding, a Major Disaster Declaration unlocks individual assistance for affected residents, public assistance for infrastructure repair, and hazard mitigation grants.
The distinction matters for Blackford County. Even if the county is added to the current Emergency Declaration, a Major Disaster Declaration could provide more substantial recovery funds for road repairs, infrastructure damage, and direct assistance to residents affected by the week-long storm event.
