Hartford City Parks Department Hits Full Staff, Reports Citywide Improvements and Vehicle Shortage
From the Hartford City Parks Board meeting on June 9, 2026
The Hartford City parks department is at full staff for the first time this season, operating two mowing crews and two crews handling painting, mulching, weeding, and planting. Employee morale was described as very high, with citizens approaching staff to compliment the improvements.
Work is underway across multiple parks. Downtown flower planters — six total — are being planted and watered by parks staff. Hoover Park received two days of weeding and new flowers. At Sigma Phi Gamma Park, a large tree was purchased for planting, though a weekend storm brought down a large limb that needs a boom truck to remove. Red, white, and blue basketball nets are being installed across all parks for the 250th anniversary celebration.
At King Park, the horseshoe pit needs attention — backboards are deteriorating and boards are missing. The estimated repair cost is $2,000 to $2,500, including new backboards and potentially used turf. The board took no vote on the matter.
A continuing vehicle shortage means three parks employees are using their personal vehicles because the department lacks enough transportation. The street department is lending one truck for approximately one week. The parks building's air conditioning is also not working, with no fix timeline mentioned.
