Hartford City Council Approves Heritage Days Street Closure Plan at Special Session
From the Hartford City Special Common Council meeting on May 11, 2026
The Hartford City Common Council held a special session on May 11 devoted solely to approving the parking and street closure plan for Heritage Days, the city's annual multi-day festival at Wyler Plaza.
The original plan called for closing High Street, but businesses along the street objected. The revised plan creates a U-shaped closure on Jefferson, Maine, and Monroe Streets around the apartments near Wyler Plaza. High Street remains open. Access to Marvin Miller's antique store, which was blocked by last year's closure, is preserved under the new plan. Eight parking spaces on the west side of the Wyler Plaza lot stay open, the alley remains accessible, and dumpster access is maintained for Wednesday morning waste pickup. Signage with traffic cones will reserve street parking in front of Obie's restaurant.
Approximately 8 to 10 food vendors are scheduled, reduced from previous years to avoid duplication after vendors complained about multiple booths selling the same items. The plan passed unanimously 4-0, with Council Members Wolfe, Aspey, Dettleston, and Skaggs voting in favor. Council Member Tracy Witt was absent.
The council also announced a street painting project with a white undercoat on June 5 and painting on June 6, a Shred Day on June 6 from 9 a.m. to noon in the city parking lot behind City Hall, and continued installation of veteran banners around town. Applications for new banners are still being accepted — contact Monica at City Hall for pricing.
