Hartford City Applies for $1.25 Million Community Crossings Road Paving Grant
From the Hartford City Board of Public Works and Safety and Safety meeting on August 17, 2026
Hartford City's Board of Public Works and Safety voted unanimously to pursue a Community Crossings matching grant that would fund the paving of 76 city blocks at an estimated cost of $1.25 million.
Under the grant, the state would cover 80% of the project — approximately $1 million — with the city responsible for a 20% local match of approximately $250,000. The application will be submitted to INDOT on September 1.
If approved, construction would begin in spring 2027. This would be Hartford City's sixth Community Crossings grant. A previous round covered 93 blocks as part of a multi-year paving program.
Dan Eckstein, Pam Weiseman, and Matt Barnes voted 3-0 to approve a financial commitment letter and authorize the mayor to sign it.
For residents, the grant would mean significant road improvements across the city at a fraction of the full cost, with the state funding four out of every five dollars.
