Absentee Owner in Alaska Asks Hartford City Board to Spare 721 Greenbrier Storage Building

From the Hartford City Property Standards Board meeting on July 8, 2026

Sandy Martin, who owns 721 Greenbrier Drive, sent a letter from Alaska — where she is caring for her sick husband — asking the board not to order teardown of the property, which she uses to store renovation supplies.

Martin cited her track record with Hartford City properties: she has restored and sold three homes in the past year (819 Greenbrier, 713 Greenbrier, and 1425 North Harrison) and is currently restoring a fourth at 612 East 4th Street. She also maintains three rental properties with paying tenants.

However, City Attorney Tyler Rothstein noted that Martin's own letter admits the property is "not maintained in a manner that allowed for human habitation, occupancy, or use" — which itself constitutes a code violation. The board also noted Martin provided no timeline for when she would no longer need the storage building.

Staff member Nikki Greider reported that Martin is responsive when contacted about her properties. Dan Eckstein suggested inviting Martin to the September meeting when she returns to Indiana. The board voted 2-0 to table until September 9, with staff directed to contact Martin requesting a timeline.
