Dunkirk Fire Volunteers Not Following Pool Fill Procedure, Mayor to Intervene

Official minutes from the April 27 Board of Works meeting reveal that Dunkirk fire department volunteers have not been following the required procedure for filling swimming pools using the department's tanker truck.

According to the minutes, volunteers are supposed to contact the Water Department before filling the tanker so the water can be metered. That step has not been followed, meaning water used for residential pool fills has gone unmetered. Mayor Jack Robbins said he will address the issue with Robert, who appears to be the fire chief.

The procedure problem came to light alongside a separate equipment issue: the fire pumper truck's pump locked up while filling a residential pool on April 27. A pump technician was scheduled to assess the damage on April 28. As of May 1, there has been no public update on the truck's status, leaving it potentially out of service for four days.

The pumper truck is a critical piece of fire response equipment. Residents should be aware that if the truck remains out of service, the department's firefighting capacity may be temporarily reduced.
