The Dunkirk City Council voted unanimously to contribute $20,000 from economic development funds toward a new $1,225,000 Jay County Solid Waste District recycling building. County Commissioner Dwayne Monroe presented the request.

The building will be located west of Tyson in Portland on 10 acres donated by Portland Economic Development. It will include a truck dock, compactors, and cardboard baling equipment. The Solid Waste District has $600,000 saved toward the project. The remaining funding is expected from Portland ($50,000, pending), the County Redevelopment Commission ($350,000), and the county. The lowest construction bid came from a business in Red Key, Jay County, and the bid must be awarded by the end of May.

Dunkirk straddles the Jay County line and participates in Jay County solid waste services. The city's recycling dumpsters will remain in place. The new building primarily serves county-wide recycling operations.
