Blackford County Internet Switch to Comcast Deferred to May 18
From the Blackford County Commissioner meeting on May 4, 2026
County IT representative Stephen presented a Comcast contract to replace Mainstream as the county's internet provider. The switch would save $500 to $600 per month, include a three-year price lock, and guarantee 99% uptime with a financial penalty if Comcast falls short.
The new service would also provide 13 IP addresses per location, up from five at some current sites. Locations covered include the courthouse, sheriff's department, health department, highway department, and the new building housing economic development, community corrections, and the prosecutor's office.
Commissioner Borgenheimer requested time to review the actual contract language before voting. The decision was deferred to the May 18 meeting. Even if approved, the switch would not take effect until the current Mainstream contract expires in 2027.
Stephen also reported he is installing a Palo Alto firewall at the sheriff's department and expects backup internet connections for both the courthouse and sheriff's department within approximately two weeks.
The internet discussion continues an ongoing effort to upgrade county technology infrastructure.
