Blackford County Historical Society Receives $1,500 After Years Without County Funding

From the Blackford County Commissioner Meeting on June 15, 2026

The Blackford County Commissioners approved $1,500 in funding for the Blackford County Historical Society in a 3-0 vote, restoring county support that had lapsed for several years.

New society president Michael Tabor, who took over in April 2026, told commissioners the county previously provided about $2,000 per year. That funding dropped to $1,000 and then stopped entirely after a change in county request forms. County Council President Jack Beckley confirmed the money had been budgeted but was never requested through the proper form.

Tabor said the society operates on $7,000 to $8,000 per year, funded by city support, member dues of $10 per year, donations, and newsletter subscriptions. The museum at 321 North High Street needs a roof replacement estimated at approximately $27,000. The current roof is more than 26 years old.

Tabor had requested $2,000. Commissioners directed him to submit a formal letter to County Auditor Lisa Simmons for next year's budget cycle.
