BCS Bans Backpacks in Classrooms for Grades 7 Through 12

Blackford County Schools board voted 3-0 Monday to ban backpacks and large bags from classrooms for all students in grades 7 through 12. Previously, only junior high students were prohibited from carrying backpacks — high school students could bring them to class. Teachers requested the change for two reasons. Backpacks have grown larger, creating tripping hazards that prevent teachers from moving through the classroom during instruction. The ban also supports enforcement of Indiana's new cell phone restrictions under SEA 78, which take effect July 1. Removing backpacks eliminates a hiding spot, allowing teachers to simply direct students to their lockers for anything they need. BCS had a similar policy in 2018 but reversed it after COVID to reduce congestion at lockers. A board member raised concerns about Chromebook damage without backpack protection, which administrator Mrs. Ely acknowledged as "a possible concern." The board also asked about defining "large bags" — the policy covers duffel bags, oversized tote bags, and similar items. Grade-level meetings will be held at the start of school to explain the changes.
