BCS Approves $34,000 Underground Tank Removal — IDEM to Reimburse Half
From the Blackford County Schools Board Meeting on August 18, 2026
The Blackford County Schools board approved a 4-0 vote to remove the aging underground diesel storage tank at the junior/senior high school, selecting Creek Run Environmental, a local Blackford County company, at a cost of $34,000.
A competing quote came in at over $50,000. Creek Run's subcontractor, SDS, will handle the physical removal, scheduled for late October 2026.
The district expects to recover half the cost — approximately $17,000 — through the IDEM's Excess Liability Trust Fund. Creek Run will handle all IDEM paperwork, including soil sampling, testing, and leakage verification. Reimbursement is expected two to three months after removal, bringing the net cost to the district to roughly $17,000.
The old 10,000-gallon underground tank will be replaced with a 2,000-gallon above-ground tank provided by Ag Best, the district's diesel supplier. Ag Best will transfer remaining fuel from the old tank to the new one at no additional cost. The district also plans to spend approximately $15,000 on a new fuel card reader system — the current system relies on parts sourced from eBay.
Parking lot repaving is planned for spring 2027 as part of the Performing Arts Center project.
